About Lake Naivasha & Hell's Gate

Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate National Park form one of Kenya's most accessible and uniquely adventurous nature destinations, located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley just 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake fringed by papyrus beds and fever trees, supporting a rich ecosystem of hippos, over 400 bird species including African fish eagles and Goliath herons, and Crescent Island, a private wildlife sanctuary where visitors can walk freely among giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and waterbuck without barriers or fences.

Hell's Gate National Park, immediately south of the lake, is one of only two national parks in Kenya where you are permitted to walk and cycle among wildlife. Named by the early explorers Fischer and Thomson for its dramatic narrow gorge and towering red-brown cliffs, the park features striking geological formations including the Fischer's Tower volcanic plug, the Central Tower, and the Ol Njorowa Gorge with its narrow slot canyons, hot springs, and steaming geothermal vents. The Olkaria Geothermal Station within the park harnesses the Rift Valley's volcanic energy, and the steaming landscape feels remarkably otherworldly.

The combination of flat cycling terrain through open plains dotted with zebra, giraffe, buffalo, and eland, followed by a hike through the narrow volcanic gorge, makes Hell's Gate a favourite among active travellers and families. Rock climbing is available on the park's imposing cliff faces, and the nearby Elsamere Conservation Centre, once the home of Joy and George Adamson of Born Free fame, adds a cultural and conservation element to any visit. The proximity to Nairobi and the range of activities available make this an ideal destination for a weekend escape or a short excursion during a longer Kenya itinerary.
