Tsavo East National Park
Kenya's Vast Red Wilderness
About Tsavo East
The Galana River, one of the longest rivers in Kenya, cuts through the park and is flanked by doum palms and lush gallery forest that contrast dramatically with the surrounding arid plains. Along its banks you will find hippo, crocodile, and herds of elephant and buffalo coming to drink. The park's other landmarks include the Yatta Plateau, the world's longest lava flow stretching nearly 300 kilometres, the Lugard Falls where the Galana River squeezes through sculptured rock formations, and Mudanda Rock, a massive inselberg that collects rainwater and attracts large herds of elephants.
Tsavo East is home to all of the Big Five, including healthy populations of lion, leopard, and the critically endangered black rhino within the fenced Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. The park also supports significant numbers of lesser kudu, gerenuk, oryx, and hirola, species more typical of Kenya's drier northern regions. Over 500 bird species have been recorded, making it one of the most important birding sites in East Africa. Its proximity to the coast makes Tsavo East a natural complement to a Mombasa or Diani beach holiday.
