Tsavo West National Park
Land of Lava, Springs, and Legends
About Tsavo West
Mzima Springs supports a thriving underwater ecosystem, and an underwater observation chamber allows visitors to watch hippos gliding beneath the surface and Nile crocodiles resting on the bottom. The surrounding palm forest is alive with vervet monkeys and prolific birdlife. Elsewhere in the park, the Shetani Lava Flows, a stark black expanse of solidified lava dating back just a few hundred years, create an otherworldly moonscape. The Chaimu Crater, a volcanic cone near the lava flows, can be climbed for sweeping views across the park.
Tsavo West is historically significant as the site of the infamous man-eating lions of Tsavo, which terrorised railway workers building the Kenya-Uganda railway in 1898. The park is home to all of the Big Five, with a significant black rhino population protected within the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. The diverse habitats support species such as lesser kudu, fringe-eared oryx, and gerenuk. With fewer visitors than Kenya's northern parks and an easy combination with Diani Beach or Mombasa, Tsavo West offers an authentic wilderness experience steeped in history and natural drama.
