About Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most celebrated wildlife sanctuary, covering approximately 1,510 square kilometres of sweeping savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests in the southwestern corner of the country. Forming the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem, the Mara is best known as the stage for the Great Migration, when over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle make their annual crossing of the Mara River between July and October. The dramatic river crossings, where herds brave crocodile-infested waters, are among the most thrilling wildlife events anywhere on the planet.

Beyond the migration, the Mara supports an extraordinary year-round concentration of predators. It is one of the finest places in Africa to observe lion prides, cheetah, leopard, and hyena in open terrain. The reserve is also home to elephants, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, and over 450 bird species. The landscape itself is iconic, with endless golden plains broken by kopjes, winding rivers, and scattered flat-topped acacias that define the quintessential African safari scene.

The Maasai Mara takes its name from the Maasai people who have inhabited the region for centuries, and cultural visits to traditional Maasai villages offer a meaningful complement to game drives. Accommodation ranges from luxurious tented camps perched along the Mara River to intimate bush camps deep in private conservancies, where night drives and walking safaris are permitted. Whether you are a first-time safari-goer or a seasoned traveller, the Mara delivers an experience that is nothing short of extraordinary.
